Vape gurgling or leaking – what to do? Causes & fixes
Why is my vape gurgling or leaking?
If your vape is gurgling or leaking, you’re not alone – it’s one of the most common vaping issues.
The good news is that in most cases it’s not a defect, but a problem related to usage, e-liquid or handling.
However, if the issue is ignored, it can eventually lead to damage to the device.
Here you’ll find the most common causes and, more importantly, what you can actually do about it.
What is actually happening?
Gurgling happens when too much e-liquid remains inside the coil and is no longer fully vaporised.
If the vape starts leaking, the excess liquid also escapes from the tank or pod.
This doesn’t only affect pods, but also tanks, clearomisers and rebuildable atomisers such as RTAs.
The most common causes
Drawing too hard (straw effect)
If you draw too hard, more e-liquid is pulled in than the coil can vaporise – the coil becomes flooded.
Temperature and cars
Heat makes e-liquid thinner. This is why leaving a device in a car, both in summer and winter, can lead to gurgling or leaking.
Altitude and pressure changes
When travelling through mountains, skiing or riding a motorcycle, pressure changes can push liquid into the coil.
Incorrect storage
Keeping a device tilted for a long time can cause flooding and leaking.
E-liquid ratio
An often overlooked factor is the ratio of your e-liquid.
E-liquids with a higher PG content are thinner and can flow into the coil more easily – which can lead to gurgling or leaking.
Many pod systems are designed for a 50 VG / 50 PG ratio.
Important: Higher temperatures make e-liquid even thinner. This means that even a 50/50 liquid can cause issues in summer or when left in a car.
More powerful devices and traditional tanks, however, are usually designed for thicker liquids. Ratios like 70 VG / 30 PG often perform better and can even help reduce leaking.
The ideal ratio always depends on the device, power level and overall design.
System design
- Pods → more sensitive to draw style
- Tanks / atomisers → more sensitive to pressure and seals
- RTA → highly dependent on wick placement and liquid flow
Note: The causes of gurgling and leaking can become much more complex depending on device type, design and usage.
In this article, we deliberately focus on the most common day-to-day issues that are relevant in real use.
If your problem goes beyond that or keeps coming back, a more detailed check may be necessary.
Gurgling vs. leaking – what’s the difference?
- Gurgling: liquid remains inside the coil
- Leaking: liquid visibly escapes from the device
In many cases, gurgling is the first step before leaking starts.
What should you do if your vape is gurgling or leaking?
“Clear out” the coil
- turn the device upside down
- fire it for 2–3 seconds without drawing
- repeat if needed
This helps remove excess liquid from the system.
If the flavour still doesn’t return to normal afterwards, it may be time to replace your coil or pod.
Clean pod or tank correctly
Pods with an integrated coil: These should usually not be washed out, as water can damage the cotton and affect vapour production.
Tanks: In most cases, the coil can be removed and the tank itself can be rinsed with water.
Important: Make sure all seals are put back correctly. Suitable replacement coils and parts are available in our shop.
Adjust your draw style
- draw steadily
- don’t pull too hard
- avoid a strong “straw effect” draw
Store the device correctly
- don’t leave it tilted for long periods
- don’t leave it in the car
Top airflow advantage
Devices with top airflow are generally less prone to leaking. Depending on the design, you’ll often find this style on newer Geekvape devices or current Vaporesso e-cigarettes.
Typical mistakes
- drawing without firing
- drawing too hard
- ignoring temperature changes
When is it actually a defect?
If your vape keeps leaking despite correct use, or if there is visible damage, there may be an actual defect.
Conclusion
If your vape is gurgling or leaking, the cause is usually too much e-liquid in the system or incorrect handling.

FAQ
Why is my vape gurgling?
In most cases, there is too much e-liquid inside the coil.
Why is my vape leaking?
Pressure changes, heat, incorrect usage or unsuitable e-liquid can cause leaking. Thinner liquids or higher temperatures can make the issue worse.
Can I wash my pod?
Pods with an integrated coil should generally not be washed out.
Is this a defect?
Usually not. Most of the time, the cause is related to usage, storage or temperature.
How can I prevent this?
Use a steady draw, store the device correctly and choose a suitable system.
